He should be celebrated in the tradition of hoodoo and the African American history! WHY ? Because
we hear about the Martins, the Malcoms, and the Harriets but we never really hear about the ones who fought back. Gullah jack was a conjure man who had a cunning spirit. He was born in Angola, Africa and enslaved in America.
Gullah Jack was a revolutionary of our people.
Gullah Jack's role in the attempted Denmark Vesey slave revolt made him infamous to South Carolinians of the mid-1800s.
Gullah Jack was described as a priest and a man with extraordinary gifts. It was said that Gullah Jack kept a small conjure bag with him always. This fact demonstrates the consistent transference of ATR’s in America back then and today.
He was also known as a man of small stature with a massive beard of unkempt whiskers, Jack was known to have inspired both fear and respect in his fellow slaves as a result of his perceived powers to manipulate the spirit realm. He instructed his fellow rebels to keep crab claws with them and to only eat parched corn meal and a peanut butter-like mash before the rebellion. These measures were believed to protect against harm and capture through supernatural means. The insurrection failed and many of the participants were jailed and executed. Gullah Jack was hanged and made an example of by the government. Though Gullah Jack was a man willing to risk his life in order to have freedom for himself and the enslaved African Americans.
He is our hero because he rebelled against the odds and the oppressors. If you know about na at Turner then Gullah Jack should also be known as well.
